On 1 October 2026, Ms. Pornpimol Sugandhavanija, Deputy Director-General of the Department of International Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, together with Mr. Somboun Sihanath, Director-General of the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, served as Co-Chairs of the Economic Sub-Group for the Senior Officials’ Meeting under the 23rd Thai – Laos Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JC) in Luang Prabang, the Lao PDR.

The Sub-Group discussed how to advance economic cooperation between Thailand and the Lao PDR ranging from promoting connectivity through infrastructure development to synchronizing logistics. The two countries also explored ways to achieve the target of increasing bilateral trade to USD 11,000 million by 2027, especially promoting new areas of cooperation in the digital economy. They also exchanged views on the Mekong cooperation with Thailand set to assume the ACMECS Chairmanship in late 2026, as well as cooperation on common issues in the Mekong sub-region, including water management, transboundary haze, and transnational crime.

ทั้งสองฝ่ายได้หารือในหลายประเด็นเพื่อผลักดันความร่วมมือด้านเศรษฐกิจระหว่างไทยกับ สปป. ลาวให้มีความก้าวหน้ามากขึ้น ทั้งในการส่งเสริมความเชื่อมโยงในด้านโครงสร้างพื้นฐานและระบบโลจิสติกส์ รวมถึงการอำนวยความสะดวกการเดินทาง ด้านการค้าเพื่อให้บรรลุเป้าหมาย 11,000 ดอลลาร์สหรัฐภายในปี 2570 และส่งเสริมความร่วมมือในสาขาใหม่ที่มีศักยภาพ เช่น เศรษฐกิจดิจิทัล นอกจากนี้ ยังได้แลกเปลี่ยนข้อคิดเห็นเกี่ยวกับกรอบความร่วมมือในลุ่มน้ำโขง โดยเฉพาะกรอบ ACMECS ซึ่งไทยจะรับตำแหน่งประธานในช่วงปลายปี 2569 รวมถึงประเด็นสำคัญร่วมอื่นๆ ในอนุภูมิภาคลุ่มน้ำโขง รวมถึงการบริหารจัดการน้ำ หมอกควันข้ามพรมแดน และอาชญากรรมข้ามชาติ

Director-General of the Department of International Economic Affairs met Mekong Institute Executive Director to discuss how to advance cooperation in the Mekong subregion

On September 18, 2026, Ms. Rujikorn Saengchantr, Director-General of the Department of International Economic Affairs, met with Dr. Anoulak Kittikhoun to mark his appointment as the 7th Executive Director of the Mekong Institute (MI). The leaders discussed strengthening subregional connectivity and sustainability through the Ayeyawady - Chao Phraya - Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) framework, specifically targeting critical shared challenges such as water resource management, transboundary haze pollution, and transnational crime. Additionally, they highlighted expanding MI's strategic role as an academic and technical advisor, particularly in supporting the ACMECS Interim Secretariat under its Memorandum of Understanding with Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Urgent Regional Action Needed to Combat Mekong Flooding Crisis

On 20 September 2024, H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with ACMECS Ambassadors to discuss an emergency response to the Mekong region flooding crisis. He emphasized the need for regional unity, proposing expedited telemeter station installations and enhanced water management cooperation to address the situation.
