ACMECS faces three major challenges across the Mekong subregion — managing water resources amid 700+ dams and severe droughts/floods, transboundary air pollution as PM 2.5 routinely breaches global safety thresholds, and transnational crime such as drug trafficking and online fraud. Response mechanisms include the 2016 Hanoi Declaration and the 2019–2023 Master Plan.
